POPPIES FOR FRIDAY

One of these things is not like the other! It is the amazing orange flower in the middle. Poppies have been around for ages. Used for many different things, such as but not limited to pollination, opium, remembrance, and for their beauty. Now we are not Matthew Berkowitz but, we do have 250 poppies coming in for your enjoyment. So we recommend stopping in to check them out. There is nothing like a crumpled up bud which opens into the colors of a techno festival!

Wish our poppies some luck, they have a long journey. They cross the sea and then they meet customs. Trust us, you will be speechless if you do get to see them.

Sometimes we, Marguerite Gardens Team, can act like we know everything. We do not. Please feel free to inform us at all times. Sometimes we can not get enough. We just cannot stop making hand tied bouquets, tussie mussies, free forms and the list never ends. Here is a sneak peak into the world of Marguerite Gardens.

These arrangements were made last Saturday. For fun and for whomever may wonder in. Paul Munro took the photo's, feel free to follow him with the link. Leah Mulder created the second mixture and Ammie Brod created the last one which sold like a hot cake for breakfast!

Warm Arrangement in The Cold Winter Days

Roses, peonies, astilbe

ginger, french tulips, pine branches

All in a warm peach, orange color palette and lighting. These were taken just before the solstice.

Mellow Yellow

Paul Munro, Kaitlyn McQuaid and Leah Mulder were working at the flower shop. Paul said, "Lets make bouquets", so the two girls said "O.K.". They hastily rummaging through the bounty of flowers to create masses of beauty. Suddenly, they were all inspired. By what? This generic flower, yarrow? How can they be inspired by a flower that is usually in your grandmas basement or in a mediocre fall wreath?

Kaitlyn, Paul and Leah knew a different use for it. To add cheer to a snowy day, they tossed it with olive braches, poppies, daffodils. They mixed it with tulips, hyacinth, roses and so much more.

If you're just a lil' chilly and feeling slightly generic, stop in. These florist can show you that one generic flower, is someone else beautiful inspiration.

Winter Outside

Who Inspires You?

To be honest with you, our customers, inspire us. Kristen Ekeland came in the store this Sunday while my friend and coworker, Martha, and I were setting up the shop. We were listening to Angus and Julia Stone. She was buying some wonderful pieces for her website photoshoot. Kristen is an awe-inspiring wedding invitation designer. Please take the time to look at her work. It is a very exciting since she is also featured on Martha Stewart this month!

The hydrangea and the vintage lace handkerchief are from our shop!

Tulip are so great because they remind us of what is to come in a few months. Tulips are simple, linear, and can also be extremely interesting. Drop in and grab a bunch or two. One of Our First Weddings

This was one of our first wedding back in 2009. Simple orange and green center pieces. These fish bowl vases were filled with mini green hydrangeas, orange sweetheart roses, orange tulips and berzillia.

The boutonniere was wrapped with silk thread to match the tie.

We have been making bouquets, cleaning and planting gardens, hanging garland and lights and even helping with some events. We have found you some inspiration from other florists which is pictured above. The Green Dandelinon, created this beautiful arrangement. They are located in Portland, Oregon sharing our common love for ranunculus and hydrangeas.

We have stacked our chairs high to make sure we can reach the shelves for the holiday season.

We have also made last minute bouquets for the bride that is in dire need. This bouquet was created for a bride that wanted to use simple autumnal colors. Everyone who saw it was wowed. With the mums in full abundance in fall combined with orange roses, who could say no to this beauty?

Chicago may be a wee bit wet and a bit colder than usual. This red monochromatic arrangement can remind us that somewhere out there it is warm. This arrangement is so tropical and textured. It has a stunning abundance of fall colors, maroon and burgundy, leucodendron and sedum and pops of pink bouvardia.

Carnivorous Plants

The front of our shop always fills up with flies in late August. We know it is gross yet, they feed these little plants. These food chain whackers are the one and only venus fly traps. They are so interesting and pretty prehistoric looking. Do you have a fly problem? These plant jaws are your decorative answer. They are also great house plant but, they do have a dormant period.

Coxcomb it looks like a colorful brain. There are so many colors of coxcomb and each one is simply stunning. Each has its distinct differences, either in their shape or their coloring. The arrangements here are a perfect representation of how coxcomb can truly hold it's own. Mixed with queen ann's lace, curly willow and proteas they prove to be the genius of this brainy floral array!

We are often asked to make longer lasting flower arrangements. We understand wanting to cheer someone up for a long time! Using floating succulents is one way in which we can help. After the arrangement is done these little guys will last for months on a countertop. They can also live longer if you re-plant them in soil. The best part is the limited care they need, you only have to water them once a month. Plus they are amazing with all these flowers and this really strong stone vase!

There is a great use of delphinium and roses, it is engaging with just the right amount of color. So we found out who made it, Martha Brummett, created this arrangement. She and her arrangements have many shared qualities, which are splendid, down-to-earth and simply fetching!

This jaw-dropping arrangement was created by Paul Munro; isn't it stunning? We love thinking "outside of the vase" hence the awesome use of birch bark. We may even ask you: "would you like a birch bark cone with that?" I think I can speak for all of us here at Marguerite Gardens by saying we have been teased enough. Come on Spring we need an abundance of lilacs, chartreuse hydrangeas and jasmine for an arrangement like this!

We are so excited here at Marguerite Gardens to see the signs that spring will arrive in a few months! Ammie Brod designed this exquisite cluster of lilacs, deep pink hellebores, brunia, lysimachia and sumac! The brown vase is perfect for a bedside table or the bathroom, come see the other colors and designs!

Almost forgot to mention the new line we received this week, Further, an up-cycling company. This company uses recycled glycerin from cooking oils and the scent is of olive, bergamot and exotic grasses; trust us, you will love it!

Succulent Planters

This arrangement consists of green and white parrot tulips, which open beautifully, and the eucalyptus nuts provide a stunning contrast to the dainty flowers. The peachy Lulu ranunculus have been ordered for Valentine's Day, and we're eagerly waiting their arrival! This vase is one of our favorites and there is only one left! As promised, here is a little collage of our newest window display. We got the coolest birch to cover the walls with. It has been really fun. I think it will be really great to keep up through the summer, and who knows? Maybe even the fall as well! The cabinet pictured was actually handmade by one of our gardening employees out of our old floor boards, which we took up to install some antique tile. It's such a great piece! I'm pretty sure we all want it for our selves... A great addition to the shop!

We have a lot of pink and red flowers right now in preparation for oh you know, no particular reason, so naturally I was drawn to them. Especially this super pale pink ranunculus. Paul made this bouquet of the week. The antique pitcher on it's own is gorgeous, but the subtle pastels in the flowers make it really sweet.

The Holidays were great at the flower shop this year! Or I guess, is that last year? Anyhoo, one thing we are sure about is making clean, crisp arrangements worthy of the New Year. Holiday arrangements are fun, but there's nothing quite like the change in seasons, especially when that season is Spring. Yeah, I know it's a long ways away, especially in Chicago, but we can dream, right? The combination of yellow, white, and green is so refreshing right now. Now to begin our countdown to Spring!!

Here is our latest holiday window! We decided to keep it clean and simple this year with white poinsettias and lanterns with candles. It's such a refreshing change from fall.

We are all kind of addicted to Saipua's blog. They make such beautifully organic arrangements. One thing I particularly like about their style, is how they seem to cluster lots of different flowers into one arrangement. It's so nice to see such a variety in a small bouquet like this one. So organic like it was just picked from the garden.

I just felt like getting in the holiday spirit today. Lately we've been making lots of arrangements for people going to holiday parties. It's always so much fun to see the variety of arrangements we can come up with, but there's nothing quite like a good amaryllis. Whether potted or fresh cut, they always look perfect for this time of year! And Martha Stewart made them even cuter with the addition of peppermints!

One of the most fun parts about working in a flower shop is just playing with flowers. For no other reason than to create something pretty. Marguerite made this one. So pretty in the antique Mason jar.

I guess this is a little creepy, but we have a lot of doll heads and vintage dolls in our shop. They are a fun alternative to the typical Halloween decorations. Our store is covered in them right now! And pretty much every other day of the year...

Yes, it is officially fall! I know I'm a little late here, but we still have a couple months of autumn left! Sadly though, our store is not this full of pumpkins anymore. I guess that's not such a bad thing though. Did you get your pumpkins yet?

This Friday, October 2nd, is the annual neighborhood art walk. This year our artist is one of our favorites, Ben Rumback. He is a local artist in Chicago and does some amazing work. Though, I am partial to him because we're getting married next month! We will be open late until ten on Friday. So if you are in Chicago and want to see some fun art, stop on by!

These are from a wedding we did in August. It was held at Architectural Artifacts here in Chicago. The bride wanted plants that her guests could take home after the reception. So, we planted, oh about 85 of these. We loved her idea so much, we even made a few for the shop!

Lately we have been having fun with more varieties of air plants. Typically, we keep lots of succulents in the shop because they are so easy to care for. These other air plants require more attention, but are totally worth it.

We are in the process of building a greenhouse in our shop. We have so many doors and windows just lying around that we decided to build a greenhouse in which to house our plants. It will be nice for them to have their very own home in our shop!

Here are a few things in our shop this month. We recently got a bunch of really neat metal flowers, antique keys, and bird houses. Of course we are always acquiring more and more antiques. The antique keys are my absolute favorite.

Andersonville Sidewalk Sale!

One of the great things about having a shop in Andersonville are all the events that go on to promote shopping at local businesses. This weekend, July 31-August 2, we are having our Annual Sidewalk Sale. The whole neighborhood will be participating and it should be a great time! We'll have lots of great sale items so if you happen to be in the area, come on by!!

This arrangement is actually from about a month ago, but I just love it. Lately I've been really enjoying working with viburnum. One of our many favorite flowers to work with at Marguerite Gardens. And I should know the name of the other fuzzy flower, but it is failing me at the moment. Is it Nigella?
